Göran Thulin – Expeditions photographer

Sverige, Kebnekaise

Five climbers on their way up to Kebnekaise’s southern peak. (The picture was taken from a helicopter.) The mountain range has two main peaks; Nordtoppen has solid rock at 2,096.8 meters above sea level and is bare in summer. The southern peak has solid rock to about 2,060 meters above sea level, and is covered by an approximately 40 meter thick glacier, which is Sweden’s only top glacier. Historically, the glacier on Sydtoppen has made this Sweden’s highest point. During the 2000s, however, melting of the glacier has reduced the height by an average of one meter per year, according to data from measurements carried out by researchers at Tarfala research station.

Due to the melting of Sydtoppen’s glacier, it has decreased by 24 m in the last 50 years, and the question is whether Nordtoppen will thus become the country’s highest punk with its 2096.8 meters when the official measurement is decided?
