Prayer mills are used in Tibetan Buddhism to recite mantras. They come in all sorts of sizes and spin clockwise in the same way that mantras are written and as the sun moves across the celestial body. When the prayer mill is spun, the prayers written in it are considered to be released. In Tibetan Buddhism, people also walk clockwise around the temple.
